It is a pack of cards, mostly seventy-eight in number used in Europe in the mid fifteenth century to play card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot. It was and is used by mystics and occultists for achieving divination or used as a map of mental or spiritual pathways from 18th century until present time.
The normal cards tarot cards have four suits. Every suit has a pip card starting from ace to ten and four face cards, which makes total of 14 cards. It has additional 21-card trump suit and a single card known as the ‘Fool’. The ‘Fool’ can act as a top trump.
There is naming convention for the tarot cards, which is done by occultists. They call the trump cards and the Fool ‘Major Arcana’ while the ten pips and four court cards in each suit as ‘Minor Arcana’. The major arcane includes Lovers, Fool, Pope and World. The minor arcana is divided into 4 suites of 14 cards each, including Swords, Cups, Wands (sometimes called Rods and Staves) and Pentacles (sometimes called Coins or Discs). Renaissance tarots are good for questions of passion, mastery and reason. If the card is reversed, then its effect is negated or inverted.
E.g., ‘Death’ upright has the meaning ‘change’ but when reversed it means ‘stagnation’.
